Terry R. Barkley

Served in the
Air Force
Terry Richard Barkley left this life to be with his Father in heaven April 10 2007 after a long and courageous fight with cancer.

Terry was born July 30 1954 and passed yesterday at his home in Suffolk VA. He is survived by his wife Sandra; daughter Amber Marie Shivley of Gates County NC; step-son Brad Pittman of Honeydew CA; step-daughter Becky Peters and her husband John of Portsmouth; special friends Clyde McFarland of Hampton and James Buck of Portsmouth. Others left to cherish his memory include life long friends and church family.

Terry was a life long resident of Portsmouth and graduated from Cradock High School. He was employed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for over thirty years. One of his life time interests was football. He progressed from the high school field were he was known as 'Sugar Bear'? to serving as a football official in the Tidewater area. Terry also enjoyed coaching for various little League Associations. Terry leaves a legacy of wit and humor but above all a belief and love for his Lord.

A memorial service will be conducted Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Western Branch Community Church by Pastor Jim Wall and Pastor Lawrence Bates. Immediately following the service the family invites friends to a reception to celebrate Terry's life by sharing with food music and memories. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be sent in Terry's name to Relay for Life Team Aloha Elizabeth River Run American Cancer Society Tidewater Area. Condolences may be registered at www.rwbakerfh.com.

Sandra: Terry and I were on the same football officiating crew for a number of seasons. I always enjoyed counting "Sugar Bear" as one of my friends. We shared meals football games and a lot of laughter during those years. My only regret is that I did not know of his illness. I am glad he's no longer hurting. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers Jeff James

I worked with Terry in shop 11 at NNSY .He will be missed by those of us who worked with him as a worker and as a friend . I worked with Terry in the Code 133 Non-Nuclear Inspection Branch at NNSY. He was a knowledgeable and dedicated structural inspector. We will miss his warmth and friendship. He was the #1 fan of the Tennessee Volunteers and I miss discussing college sports with him in great detail. It is very comforting knowing that his suffering is over and he is in heaven now. Our hearts go out to the Barkley family and relatives.

I'm very sorry to hear of Sugarbear's passing. I went to high school with him and remember him as always being pleasant and kind to everyone...and having a great sense of humor! My prayers are with his family and close friends as I know these are difficult times but how thrilling to know that he is with our Lord! May you be blessed with many wonderful memories until you meet again.

Greetings I was a long time classmate of Terry's dating back to our days at Mapp Jr. High. Terry and I were never all that close in fact I was intimidated by him throughout high school. Years later I'm married and living in Oklahoma. As a fellow servant of the Lord I will look forward to meeting him again. I always admired Terry and am glad to hear that his life turned out to be one to be proud of. In the end a good name and testimony is all that really matters. May The Lord bless you and His Spirit give you peace in this trying time. Blessings Richard Abrams - class of '73 CHS.
