Shirley Lee "Mac" McGary
Shirley Lee “Mac” McGary passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 26, 2019. Born February 11, 1933 in Kentucky, he was a son of the late Lafayette Shirley McGary and Ella Margaret Atherton McGary. Mac proudly served his country in the United States Navy, retiring as Boatswain’s Mate Chief Petty Officer, having served in Korea and Vietnam. After retirement from the Navy, Mac worked at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital and Norfolk General Hospital as the Lab Administrator. He was an active member of Waverly Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and in many other capacities. Mac enjoyed many things in life. His passions were horseback riding, camping, and bike riding. You could find him biking all over the county, collecting aluminum cans for “Buddy Break”. This was near and dear to his heart as he was an active supporter for over 10 years. This is a respite program for parents of special needs children. Mac and his wife, Beverly, enjoyed many trips together and he loved and cherished them all. They enjoyed trips to the Greenbriar River Trail in West Virginia, through the Shenandoah Valley, or on the New River Trails in Southwest Virginia. Their fondest trip was a camping and pack trip through the Teton Range in Wyoming. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth McGary, and a sister, Geraldine Hayden.
