It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Russell Luis Bruns, Sr., 86, on August 28, 2018, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and uncle. He was the son of the late Henry and Mabel Bruns and was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Romaine Bruns.

He retired after 30 years of service with the Norfolk Police Department. After his retirement with the police department, he worked as a magistrate for the Commonwealth of Virginia for 11 years. Russell was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Commodore Lodge 3, Freemason, Berkley Lodge, and Scottish Rite. He was also a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Lela Bruns; children, Russell L. Bruns, Jr. (Paula), Leslie Benson (Jeff) of Suffolk; 5 granddaughters, Danielle Harrison (Dwain), Megan Batten (Craig), Katelyn Benson, Kaitlyn Bruns, Lindsey Bruns; 1 great grandson, Greyson Russell Harrison; and soon to be a great granddaughter; beloved dog, Minnie; sister, Lizette Borrison; and his brother, Frank Bruns.

Love is eternal, a celebration of life will be on Saturday, September 1, 2018 from 2 to 4 pm at the home of Jeff and Leslie Benson. Casual attire is requested. The family is being served by R.W. I am truly sorry for your loss. I knew Russell as a very nice guy and for a number of years see him at the Police Picnic. I attempted to locate him several times as I keep a record of all retirees addresses and phone numbers with negative results. The retirement office will not give out ones address. Russell was liked by everyone. Although we never worked together he was well respected by all that knew him. Just recently Chief Henson ask me about him and wondered how he was. However I didn't know. God Bless
