John Franklin Appel, Jr. of Surry passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 25, 2018. Born January 8, 1938 he was a son of the late John Franklin Appel, Sr. and Alice Jones Appel. John served his country in the U.S. Navy and continued serving his community on the Surry Volunteer Fire Department and Surry Volunteer Rescue Squad. He was a farmer and was proud to be a member of the Flying Farmers. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Joann Pittman.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Gary Appel and wife, Anna, and Chris Appel; Grandchildren, Jessica Cunningham, Matthew Pittman, Christen Appel, Cara Epps, and Chris Appel, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Collton Cunningham, Cayden Carver, Aubree Carver, and Graycen Pittman; sister, Betty Ann Addison and husband, Robert; and long-time companion, Mary Beth Lovelace.

The family will receive friends Saturday, July 28, 2018 at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Wakefield Chapel from 6pm to 8pm. A graveside service will be held at 2pm Sunday, July 29, 2018 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Surry.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Surry Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 260, Surry, VA, 23883, Surry Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 188, Surry, VA, 23883, or a charity of your choice. Condolences may be posted at www.rwbakerfh.com.
