Jennie Dell Smithwick
On Saturday April 28, 2012, surrounded by her family, Jennie Dell Smithwick was guided to her eternal home.
Jennie Dell was born on March 3, 1935, in Manchester, GA, to the late Vines Gene and Jennie Emily Collier. At a young age and after the death of the father, most of the family moved to Portsmouth. One of twelve children, she grew up with strong and lasting family connections. She married her childhood friend, John B. Smithwick, also from Portsmouth, on Feb 3, 1952. They had three daughters.
She was a stay at home mom until her girls were all in school, then she began a career as sale associate and then manager and buyer of a dress shop, Village Fashions. She loved pretty clothes and shoes. She was a retired bookkeeper of many years. Jennie Dell loved the beach, fishing, traveling, and camping with family and friends. She loved the Lord, her church and church family.
A devoted wife and mother, she was an avid reader. She loved her books. She enjoyed discussing politics. She loved her home. A lover of life, she enjoyed the beauty of nature and appreciated all God's creations. She loved sitting on their porch watching the ducks and listening to the bull frogs. She adored her life-long companion and friend, Johnny for sixty years. Together they shared many wonderful adventures with family and friends. She enjoyed fifty-six years of love and friendship with her girls, Terrie Lynn, Sherri Lee and Johnette and memories of adventures with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, family and friends. She enjoyed a full life. Her family will cherish many wonderful memories of her unique ways: her laughter, great smile, the way she stirred the soup, the way she held her flyswatter, the way she tapped her foot while on the porch swing, her great hats, talking, having snacks, peps, totty time down on the creek, her giggle, and the Mi Mi Look.
She is survived by her loving husband and friend for sixty years, John; daughters, Terrie Riddick, Sherri Lee Matthews and husband, Mike, Johnette Carter and husband, Billy; five grandchildren, Jedd Wright (deceased), Jenny Gray, John Clayton Carter, Heather Carter and Maria Taylor Matthews; great grandchildren, Jacob and Jadyn Gray; three sisters, two brothers and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
