James Norman Oliver Sr. 70 passed away Friday November 3 2006 following a courageous battle with cancer.

Norman was born May 28 1936 to the late Jesse and Ruby Oliver of Smithfield VA. He attended Hargrave Military Academy where he excelled in track and field. Norman grew up on Longview Farm where he farmed with his older brother J. Vernon Oliver Jr. for 40 years. Norman's passion in life was operating a grain combine and hauling peanuts. He harvested thousands of acres of crops for other farmers throughout his career.

When Norman was not farming he loved to spend time with family who loved him dearly. His greatest enjoyment in life was watching his children and grandchildren play sports; listening to Elvis on his jukebox and watching The Black Number 3 race was relaxing for him. Norman had many hobbies over the years: restoring 1957 Chevys collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia and designing and making outdoor furniture.

In the summer of 1955 at the age of 19 he met the love of his life Rosa Arelene Mitchell. Thereafter they were inseparable for a wonderful forty-seven years of marriage. One of the saddest moments of their life was the death of their fourth child Darlene Dale on December 11 1970.

Norman is survived by his wife: Arelene; three children: daughter Teresa Joyce and husband Kevin; daughter Robin Everett; son Jimmy Oliver and wife Pamela; seven grandchildren: Lindsey Everett Daniel Everett Brandon Joyce Tyler Oliver Meredith Oliver Cassidy Joyce and Lauren Oliver; two brothers and a sister. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm Monday November 6 in Suffolk Christian Church with a brief graveside ceremony following at Whiteheads Grove Baptist Church in Smithfield. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 pm Sunday November 5 at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory on 509 W. Washington Street in Suffolk and other times at the residence.
