Floyd Wilson Brantley, 81, passed away Monday at Obici Hospital.  He was born January 16, 1937 in Courtland, VA and was the son of Richard O. Brantley and Lizzie Ellis Brantley.

Floyd graduated from Courtland High School in 1954 as Salutatorian.  He went on to serve as a Weigh Master Supervisor for Virginia Department of Transportation for 35 years.  He received an award from the State Police for maintaining exemplary working relationships with employees of the state police.  Floyd served as a Sergeant in the Virginia Army National Guard and as an Officer of Elections for the City of Suffolk.

Service was an important part of Floyd’s life.  He was a Blood Service Volunteer of the Year 2013 for the American Red Cross.  As a blood donor he gave 14 gallons.  Until his death, he was the President of The Woodmen of the World Suffolk Chapter 2 and was awarded Mr. Woodman in 1994 from Woodmen of the World.   He served for 32 years with the Suffolk Fire Department and was Deputy Chancellor for Lodge #50 for Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias of Virginia.  Floyd was Secretary of the Ruritan National – Holland District and a member of the National Beta Club.

Floyd loved Chick-fil-A.  He was a VIP customer for life at the Suffolk Chick-fil-A.  Floyd was a dedicated servant to his community.  He helped with yard work for those too elderly to do it themselves, and often drove those same elderly people to doctor appointments and to get groceries when they could no longer drive.  Floyd will be sorely missed by all who knew him and his happy smile.

Floyd is survived by his sister Dorothy B. Cross; two nephews, John C. Cross III (wife Lynn Moon) and Stephen T. Cross; one great nephew, Joshua T. Cross; one great niece Marie C. Evans (husband Terry Evans); three great-great nephews, Andrew J. Evans, Michael L. Evans, and John H. Evans; and many other nephews, nieces and cousins.

Dot, I am sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed coming upon Floyd as we moved about Suffolk. He so enjoyed any conversations we had about Southampton County.
