Clyde Gatewood Simmons native and lifelong Suffolk resident passed away early Tuesday morning November 28 2006 at Lake Prince Woods Skilled Care Center. He is survived by his three daughters Ida Simmons Mary Darden Hearring and Martha Simmons; his three grandchildren Miranda Darden Meredith Darden Kelly Brad Rose; and great-granddaughter " Kinsley Rose.
During World War II" " he enlisted in the U. S. Army at age 17 and volunteered for the Army Air Corps. He flew 35 missions and was shot down three times in the South Pacific while a tail-gunner on B-24s.
After the war" he returned to Suffolk married Mattie Lucille Duck Simmons and began a job with Berkley Feed Company as a route salesman serving the farmers in the surrounding counties. It was work he continued until he retired. After the death of his first wife he married Margaret Ward Simmons. Together the two were known for feeding and protecting the fowl living in the pond below Hill Crest Nursing Home " until his dear Margaret died in 2002.
He was a founding member of the Joe Bagley Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars as well as a member of the American Legion Post 57" " a charter member of the Wilroy Road Ruritan Club and was among the first members of Oxford Methodist Church. He was recognized for his regular attendance and many years of faithful service to these organizations.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 AM in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory by the Rev. Michael D. Halley with burial in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Monday from 7 to 8:00 PM. Condolences may be registered at
