Charles Douglas McPhail “Doug”, 99, passed away peacefully Monday, March 29th, 2021. He was the son of Daniel Thomas and Vera Ineta McPhail. Doug is preceded in death by his wife Sara, daughter Sara Douglas Harris and husband Allen, and brothers James and William.

Born in Mt. Olive, N.C. he spent most of his life in Enfield, and later Raleigh and Pinehurst. His final years were spent in Suffolk Va. Left to cherish his memory of a life well lived are his son Phil and Barbara and seven grandchildren, Blaker & Holly McPhail, Jay Dixon, Sarah McPhail Giacometti, Rod, Doug and Scott Harris and eight great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Theria McPhail; nephew, Dan McPhail (Gwen) and nieces, Billie Carol McPhail and Jan Moon (Bill). 

Doug was a World War II veteran and was blessed to go on an honor flight on his 90th birthday.  He was a true patriot who served his country and showed gratitude and love to others every day of his life. 

Doug spent the last 10 years of his life at Lake Prince Woods Retirement Center where he made many new friends and was loved by all.  The family appreciates the care he received from his caregiver Judy Gales who loved and cared for him for 4 years.  In addition, the staff of the health center showed love and compassion during this past year when family could not visit in person. 

A memorial service will be held at Main Street United Methodist Church on April 24, 2021 at 2:00 pm and a graveside service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made to Enfield United Methodist church, 209 Whitfield St., Enfield, NC 27823R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory 509 W. Washington St, Suffolk, VA 23434, is serving the family. Condolences may be made online at
