Bruce Thomas Kinsey

Waverly, VA
03.26.1962 - 07.09.2020

Bruce Thomas Kinsey, 58, of Waverly, Virginia, passed away peacefully in the early morning of July 9, 2020 at his home with his wife by his side.  Born in Suffolk, Virginia, Bruce was the youngest son of Robert Edward Kinsey, Sr. and Dorothy Virginia (Bowden) Kinsey, both deceased.  He is also preceded in death by his brother, Robert Edward Kinsey, Jr., as well as his stepmother Lell Bailey Kinsey.  Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Kathy Ann Kinsey, his brother Kenneth Henry Kinsey and his wife Sheila, his brother Gary Lawrence Kinsey and his wife Judy, sister-in-law Kay Kinsey, his aunt Kathleen Kinsey Williams, stepsister Constance Hall, and his stepdaughter Elizabeth Harrell Beckley, (Lisa), and her husband James.  Bruce is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Master Sergeant James Levi Helms, USA, Retired, and his wife Tammy, his sister-in-law Sandra Helms Mitchell and her husband Walt, sister-in-law Sherry Helms, and several cousins, nephews, and nieces as well as many special friends.  Bruce also leaves behind his devoted children, Sheena, (“not quite right” chocolate lab), Kodi, (black lab), Lynx, (yellow tabby cat), and Charlie, (the Beta fish).

Bruce, also known as, “the nicest guy around,” made friends wherever he wandered.  To be a friend was to be family in many cases.  Whether you met him in the line at a store, as a member of the Waverly Rescue Squad, at a music gig where he played the drums, or at work at Standard Motor Products, you were often gifted with a bashful smile and genuine kindness.  His greatest loves were his wife, his pets, being in a band, fishing, and the Washington Redskins.  (His love for the Redskins could be rocky at times but he was not a quitter.)  He was happiest at home playing with his labs, relaxing in the pool, or just piddling around in the man shed.

A celebration of life video will be posted to FaceBook as there will not be a funeral or memorial service per his wishes.  Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society – Virginia Chapter in Bruce’s memory.

I lost my soulmate, best friend and the love of my life. He suffered thru so much the last three months with lab work, tests, scans, hospitalizations being isolated from visitors due to the pandemic. He was able to come home to be with his family and fur babies. He was comfortable and is now in Heaven with his mom, whom he lost to cancer when he was only six years old, and his yellow lab, Tash, who we lost to bone cancer six years ago. Bruce is at Peace now.

Bruce was very kind man. He was always helpful and friendly to everyone he met. He fought hard and even during the toughest times always had a upbeat disposition. I know he is now in Gods hands and is surrounded by those who love him.

Even though I didn’t know Bruce real well...He always spoke to me, called me by name and asked me how I was doing every time he came into the drugstore. I remember FB post from him as I was going thru my liver transplant always expressing care and concern. Kathy, you and Bruce seemed to be a match made in heaven. I am so sorry for your loss. Hold tight to your memories and know he is no longer suffering .

Bruce was a great friend, fishing buddy, music buddy. and just hang around and BS with buddy, sure am going to miss him. Even in the end when things were getting rough he still managed to crack me up with his sense of humor. I will always think of him whenever I'm playing my guitar and was fortunate to be his friend, he was well cared for by Kathy, whom I called the best nurse in Waverly, until we meet again in the sky my brother

Condolences from the Hanlon's. Bruce was SMP's go-to for First Aid. He was definitely true SMP blue. His wit, positive attitude and smile stood out. His love for his wife, family and friends was amazing. I am glad to have known him.

I had the honor of meeting and caring for Mr. Kinsey during the last three months. I had not seen him in a while and missed seeing his videos of his labs drying off by the pool or videos he shared with me of his band playing music. I shared videos of my lab with him and we’d have a good laugh together. He certainly made my days better and I will miss him even though I knew him for just a short while. I am so sorry for your loss.
