Alan Kent Massey, age seventy three, passed away at his home on Monday, December third, surrounded by the people he loved the most in this world including his faithful dog, Suzy.

Alan was a native of Ahoskie, North Carolina.  He was a graduate of Ahoskie High School where he played Center on the football team.  He was voted all conference and was dubbed "Roadblock Massey-pound for pound the meanest man around."  He attended High Point College and graduated from East Carolina University School of Business.  He was an avid Pirate fan faithfully supporting them through their highs and lows.

The son of Rupert and Lillian Massey, Alan leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Sarah Askew Massey; his beloved daughters, Elizabeth Massey Adams and Leslie Massey Fenton.  He enjoyed a loving relationship with his sons-in-law, Ron Adams and Matthew Fenton.  And he took great joy in the sunshines of his life:  his two grandchildren, Parker Logan Adams and Harper Elizabeth Fenton.  Alan was the very happiest when he was in the company of his family.

He was predeceased by his brother Vann Massey and is survived by his brother, David Massey along with the children of his brothers Leila Phillips, Jason Massey, Jennifer Otavsky and  also niece, Julie Byrd.

Alan was a retired banker.

The family would like to thank the many fine people who cared for Alan at Duke Cancer Center, Durham, North Carolina and Virginia Oncology Center, Newport News, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to Cancer Care Foundation of Tidewater, Post Office Box 12693, Norfolk, Virginia 23541.

Dearest Sarah, I send my love and offer my condolences to you and your family. Though I live in Florida and did not have the honor of truly knowing Alan, it was evident from family stories and Facebook posts that he was a loving gentleman who adored his daughters, his grand babies, and his amazing wife. Your lives will be forever changed, but you each have beautiful memories to share. May those memories and God’s Grace see you through. I am praying for you and your family even though I can’t be with you. Love, Lynnette

Liz and family,
Such a beautiful service for your dad today. It was evident that he was loved, and loved well. By opening your hearts and sharing such beautiful memories, it allowed those of us that never met your dad, to know what a special person he was to you all and to those that had the pleasure of knowing him. May your memories sustain you in the difficult times. He is now healed and with the Lord. And know that he will be “ alright.”
Love, prayers and hugs,
Cathy
