Several years ago, the chancel door of Historic St Luke’s in Smithfield needed some attention. The curator, Richard Lee Austin, was wheeled down from the administration offices in his wheelchair, a necessity due to a stroke. Holding on to the cane he would use when he arrived, a six-year-old girl regarded him with his silvery white hair and beard and innocently inquired, “are you three hundred years old, too?” In his gentlemanly Southside Tidewater accent, he responded, “yeesss,” no doubt pleasing both the little girl and her father with his kind response.

Barbara Jean Carr, 81, peacefully passed away at her residence on Friday, July 19, 2019, with her family surrounding her in love. She was the daughter of the late Ernest Leroy and Eva Mae Tillett. She was predeceased in death by a son, Troy Carr, a brother, Ernest Tillett, Jr. and a sister, Carolyn Tillett.

Bernard Leigh Barlow of Smithfield, VA went to be with his Lord on July 18, 2019 with his family by his side.

Bernard was the son of the late Johnnie B. and Bettie Savedge Barlow. He is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia King Barlow, and his brother William Gordon Barlow (Kitty).

He is survived by one sister, Betty Elliott Bryan and two brothers, Thomas Glenn Barlow (Anne), and Carl Walter Barlow (Patsy), and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia Rogers Rives passed away peacefully on July 13, 2019, at Greenfield Residences at Monument Avenue.  Affectionately known as “Sister” or “Sis” to many friends and family, Virginia was born on March 5, 1930 in Wakefield, Virginia, to Bernice White Branch and Webster Vernon Rogers.  Her husband and the love of her life, Sterling E. Rives, Jr., died in 2000.  She is survived by her three sons, Sterling, Andrew and Bailey, and their families.
