Judith “Judy” Whealton Moret, 72, a resident of Kay Avenue, died Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born in Newbern, North Carolina on November 29, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Lula Cahoon Whealton.

She is survived by her sisters, Janice DeYoung (Peter) of Chesapeake, and Linda Edgerton (Jack) of Clinton, N.C. and several nieces and nephews.

Emily Dixon Bandlow Hood, 87, went to be with the Lord on September 10, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Ruth H. and John R. Dixon.  She was predeceased by her husband’s George Richard Bandlow and William Charles Hood. Emily was a retired LPN, and was a lifelong member of James River Community Church.

She is survived by her son Bradford Richard Bandlow; daughter Bernadette Umbenhaur; grandchildren Angela Hostettler and Benjamin Umbenhaur; four great grandchildren; and a special caregiver her nephew Henry Carter; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marion S. Vinnelrod, 86, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2017 after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s. She was the daughter of the late Ester and Torbjorn Sorensen. Marion was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

She is survived by her husband Odd Vinnelrod; daughter, Grace Vogel, and husband, Mark; son Paul Vinnelrod and wife, Theresa Gonzales; grandchildren Christopher Vogel and wife, Meryl; Matthew Vogel and wife Cam; Adam Vogel, Rachel Vinnelrod and Emilio Vinnelrod; great grandchildren Skylar, Rylee and Owen Vogel; and sister Eileen Jacobsen.

Charles Edward Cross “Sonny” 88 went to be with the Lord on September 6, 2017. He was the son of the late Lorea V. Barnes and Charles E. Cross, Sr.

Sonny was a retired Captain from the Portsmouth Fire Department and was an Army Veteran. He loved to fish and holds the Virginia record for a 17 ½ pound flounder. He also loved his red truck, one of the last trucks off of the Norfolk assembly line. Sonny was a caring family man and he will be greatly missed. He also enjoyed his girls at Dennis Spaghetti and Steak House.

Sue Garner Strickland, 79, went to be with the Lord on September 5, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Lula and Benjamin Joel Garner. She was predeceased by her husband Garland Eugene Strickland; son Bobby Glen Strickland and grandson Galaspa Claude (GC) Duck III.

Sue was a helper to many, she loved people, singing, cooking, gardening and flowers. She also had a love for nature and animals. Taking care of others gave her purpose to her life. It brought her much joy. She was a wonderful caring soul.

Linwood (Bert) Bertram Walton, Jr., 62, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 4, 2017 in his beloved Outer Banks surrounded by his family. Bert was preceded in death by his father, Linwood B. Walton, Sr.

He was a loving husband, father, brother, son, and a friend to all who knew him. He loved spending time with his family, playing golf, and enjoying time in the Outer Banks. His kindness and generous spirit will be missed by many.

Annie Mae Heffington, 91, passed away September 1, 2017.  She was the daughter of the late Junius Lee and Berta Davis Oliver.  Annie Mae was predeceased by her husband of 66 years Carlton E. Heffington; a granddaughter, Sicilia Espaillat of Virginia Beach;  brothers  William Edward Oliver and Eddie Lee Oliver, sisters Miriam Dail Baker and Ruth O. Nielson all of Suffolk. 

She retired from J. C. Penney in Suffolk as Office Manager and was a member of First Baptist Church Main Street and Eunice Bible Class.

Alfred Duncan, Jr. "Fred", 61, of Windsor was called home to be with his Savior unexpectedly Saturday, September 2, 2017. Fred was a very active member of Mill Swamp Baptist Church and a well-known member of his community. Fred always enjoyed life to its fullest and loved photography, reading his bible, spending time with his family and camping at the river.

In addition to close friends and loved ones, Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Dr. Alfred J. Duncan, Sr. and Thaddia Bell Duncan; as well as a sister, Karen Duncan Olin.

Thelma was born on December 5, 1923 in Oahu, Hawaii. She died peacefully on Wednesday August 30, 2017 at Consulate Health Care of Norfolk.

Thelma was predeceased by her husband, Edward Robb Scott of Smithfield, Virginia, who died on October 25, 2016. They were married for 57 years.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jackie Lani Howes of Olathe, Kansas and Patricia Atcherley Ha’aheo Hitchcock of Paradise, California; 4 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and a twice-times-great-granddaughter.

Joe Wesley Alexander “Wes” 82 went to be with the Lord on August 26, 2017 surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late Jeanette Piland and Leon Alexander.

Wes was a lifelong member of Suffolk Christian Church. He has been retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 27 years. In his retirement he loved to shoot and was an honorary member of the Nansemond-Suffolk Shooting Club. Wes also had become known as the Candle Man throughout the Tidewater area.

Joseph Edward Hall, 91, went to be with the Lord on August 26, 2017. He was the son of the late Helen and Matthew Hall.

Edward graduated from William and Mary in 1949 and he was an army veteran serving in WWII. He was a member and past deacon of Windsor Congregational Christian Church in Windsor, he was a past Chairman of the Isle of Wight School Board and past Councilman of the Town of Windsor. Edward was a lifetime member of Purdie Masonic Lodge No 170. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed participating in tennis, golf, and baseball well into his 80’s.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be missed by all who knew him. Fred served his country in the U.S. Navy. After retirement from the U.S. Navy, he worked as a machinist for Metro Machine Shipyard and the Virginia Department of Transportation. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Anita Johnson.
