Elmer David Schildt, 92, passed away February 11, 2017.  He was born in Bloomington, IL.  After serving in WWII, Elmer relocated to Poughkeepsie, NY, to marry and work at IBM before retiring to Virginia.  He enjoyed model trains, clocks, and playing his guitar.

Elmer is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Virginia Gillespie Schildt; son, Schuyler Schildt; daughter, Stacy Butt; grandchildren, Kyle Ann Malabanan, Jason Wood, Jesse Schildt, Ryan Schildt; and 7 great-grandchildren.

Doris Jean Hedgebeth Gomer passed away Friday, February 10, 2017 at Nansemond Pointe. Doris was born on April 2, 1931. She was the daughter of the late Claude and Susie Scott Hedgebeth. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Bob Gomer as well as sisters Eloise Vick and Odelle Holland, brother Claude Hedgebeth, Jr. and son-in-law Fred Silcox.

Monica Kristin Hughes, 31, passed away suddenly but peacefully on February 10, 2017 with her mother and brother Nicholas by her side. She was known throughout the community as a sweet and happy girl who was loved by everyone she came in contact with. Though she had cerebral palsy Monica was able to do many things with her family from eating at the local restaurants, to traveling to Cancun, Mexico, and with her love for music attending an Aretha Franklin concert. Alfred (Al) R. DeMatteo, CPO USN retired torpedoman passed February 8, 2017.  Born November 14, 1926 in Wakefield, Massachusetts.  Son of Carmella Lunetta DeMatteo.  He was predeceased in death by his beautiful wife Josephine and infant daughter Diane Marie.  Additionally his siblings also predeceased: Ann, Rose, Joan, Emily, Edith, John, Tiki, Edward and his male parent Ralph DeMatteo. 

Al is survived by his daughters Billie, JoAnne, LouAnne and Tina.  His sons Corby, Al and Joe.  He has 17 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Joel Claude Whitmore, Jr. ?Boots?, 89, of Wakefield passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 1, 2017. He was a son of the late Joel Claude Whitmore, Sr. and Nina Branch Whitmore. Mr. Whitmore was the oldest member of Rocky Hock United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer form 42 years. He served on the board of ASCS Surry County Committee Board for many years and was a recipient of the American Farmer Degree Award. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Frances H. Kelley, one sister, Jean K. Norris of Arlington,Virginia, and five children:  Alan Kelley and wife Holly of Santa Rosa, California; Michael Kelley of Fort Worth, Texas; Carol Kelley of Chesterfield, Virginia; Martha Jean Saunders of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Kathy McClure of Asheville, North Carolina.  He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
