Barbara Palmer Powell, 76, passed away on July 17, 2017, at her home.

She was born in Suffolk, Virginia, on May 26, 1941, and was the daughter of the late Otho Jerome Palmer and Alice Pond Palmer.

Barbara was a graduate of PanAm Business School in Richmond, Virginia. She was an avid bridge player and a long-time member of Colosse Baptist Church, Windsor, where she served in many capacities throughout the years.

David Gary Bennett of Ivor passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2017. Born September 12, 1967, he was a son of Madge Valerie Coleman Bennett and the late James Clinton Bennett, Sr. He was a loving and devoted son, husband, brother, father and friend who will be missed by all who knew him. David served in the U.S. Navy including tours in the Persian Gulf and Iraq, retiring in 2006. After retiring from the U.S. Navy, David worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation as a Shift Coordinator at the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry.

Mrs. Whitley was a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend who will be missed by all who knew her. She attended Calvary Baptist Church in Smithfield. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert H. Whitley, Sr.; her sister, Sarah Hand and her brothers, Lewis, Ben, Claude, and Dawson Williams.

Floyd B. Twiford, 89, went to be with the Lord on July 6, 2017. He was the son of the late Sallie and Carl H. Twiford. He was predeceased by his first wife Cora Mae Twiford; son Mark R. Twiford; brothers Carl, Fred, Richard, Edward and Donald Twiford; and sister Myrtle Twiford.Floyd was a US Marine serving in both World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #148 in Portsmouth for over 50 years. He was co-owner of Coleman’s Nursery for more than 40 years.

Patrick George Umscheid, 88, died July 5, 2017. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Wilma Laverne Sutterlin. He was born January 3, 1929, in Flush, Kansas, the son of late Raymond Peter and Stella Margaret Siebert Umscheid. He is predeceased by two brothers, Dennis and Stephen Umscheid and four sisters, Rayone Ekart, Rose McClure, Nita Chilcott and Betty Ridder. He worked for JC Penney Co in management for over forty-one years. During this time, he lived in many states where he was always active serving on various committees at his local parishes.

Joseph “Joe” Marvin Bryant, 80, passed away on July 4, 2017, surrounded by his family.

Joe was born January 1, 1937 in Nansemond County, son of the late Marvin G. and Emily T. Bryant and was also predeceased by a sister, Louise B. Mathias and brothers, James Bryant and Walter Bryant.

Joe was a machinist with the Newport News Shipbuilding, retiring in 1974, after 19 years of employment.

Bill was the son of William H. and Josie Duval Kinsey, born in Suffolk, VA on February 15, 1941.

He is predeceased by his parents; and brothers, Robert Alan Kinsey, Gerald “Jerry” Wayne Kinsey; a niece, Amy Kinsey Rima; and his beloved “Doxie Josie”.

James Joseph Delp, 69, born in Ashland, West Virginia, passed away on Monday, July 3, 2017, in Suffolk, VA. He was the son of Rose M. Wyne and the late Philip Wirth Wyne.

Mr. Delp, also known as “Jim”, graduated from Norview High in 1966, and immediately enlisted in the Marines where he served in Vietnam as a Marine Sergeant, and earned a Bronze Star for his bravery. He was very proud to serve our country. After completing his tour of duty, he spent many years as a housing inspector with the cities of Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, and Norfolk.

Martha Wren Briggs, 84, died July 2, 2017, at her residence, “Twelve Oaks,” the family farm on Wakefield Road, Southampton County.

She was born in Princeton, New Jersey, on May 30, 1933, to Garland Baird Briggs (who was an educator and then treasurer of IBM) and Mattie Williams Briggs. She resided in the New York City area (including Port Washington, New York) until her retirement in 1987, after which she and her mother moved to Williamsburg, Virginia. She moved to the family farm in 2014.

​​​​​​“Dot” Gretchen Pech Williams, 89, died at her home surrounded by her daughter Joyce, friend Lea, and her beloved babies Jacky, Jilly and Mickey, on June 21, 2017. Born August 14th, 1927 in Buffalo New York, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Viola Pech of Buffalo New York. Dot was predeceased by her favorite sister Mary Vassallo, and her brother Raymond Pech.

Dot worked as the officer manager for Williams Taxidermy Studio, owned and operated by husband F. Leonard Williams, who died in August 2006. Dot was the best mom, grandmother and friend anyone could ask for.

          Francis was a member of West Suffolk Baptist Church. He retired as a First Sergeant from the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office after 30 years of service in law enforcement; and he was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Suffolk Lodge #41.
