Harry Jackson “Jack” Pettit, III, went to be with the Lord on May 15, 2017. He was the son of the late Ada Mary and Harry J. Pettit, Jr.

Jack was a life member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Suffolk where he served on the Vestry and served the church and trustees as Treasurer. He was a past member of the Suffolk School Board and was retired from VDOT where he was the Human Resource Manager. Shortly after high school he served in the US Coast Guard and some of his favorite past times included fishing, and hunting and he still loved being outdoors.

James A. Everett, 83, of Suffolk went home to be with the Lord and his loving wife, Annie Odell Everett on May 9, 2017. He was the son of the late Nellie Grace Everett. He was predeceased by his brothers, William Everett and Robert Earl (Buddy) Everett and his sister Mary Elizabeth Strouthers. James was an active member of Great Fork Baptist Church and the Calvin Davis Sunday School Class. He retired from VDOT in 1991.

Barbara Dempsey Monteiro, a resident of Windsor, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 9, 2017. Born May 21, 1934 in Portsmouth, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Hazel Snyder Dempsey. Along with her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Monteiro.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory a son, Louis H. “Hank” Monteiro; a daughter-in-law, Francis G. “Penny” Monteiro, both of Windsor, Virginia; two daughters; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and two brothers.

Arleen Leona Adams of Ivor passed away peacefully Sunday, May 7, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family. Born September 10, 1943 in Illinois, she was one of nine children of the late Herbert and Mary Verbunt Smith. Arleen was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and friend and will be missed by all who knew her. Arleen never met a stranger; she had a giving spirit and a kind heart. When she was not spending time with her family, she loved to go watch a movie or crochet with her friends, the SoCo Knitters and Crocheters, at the Walter Cecil Rawls library in Courtland.

Curtis was born in Devils Lake, ND, he served in the United States Navy for 4 years, including 2 tours in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1971. He married Sandra L. Wing August 10, 1974 in her hometown of Mandan, ND. They had 5 children and lived in Devils Lake till 1999 then moving to Suffolk, VA where their children joined them.

Cloyd Crockett Morris, Jr. died peacefully at MCV/VCU in Richmond, VA, Aopril 27, 2017 while surrounded by his loving family and pastor. Crockett was born on February 6, 1929 to the late Reba Tibbs Morris and CLoyd Crockett Morris, Sr.

She was born in Southampton County the oldest child of Leland and Lucille Whitehead, and she was raised an old fashioned country girl on her parents’ farm near Sebrell, VA. She survived the passing of both her parents and of 2 younger brothers, Leonard and William Whitehead.

Bobby Wayne Owen passed away peacefully on April 17, 2017. He is preceded by his father Arbie Rudolph Owen and mother Lula Kate (McDuffie) Owen, brother Doyle Aubry Owen, and sister Sylvia Owen Thomas. Bobby (or Wayne as he was called by many) was born in White Oak, NC on October 10, 1937. He attended Elizabethtown High School and graduated in 1956 and joined the U.S. Navy in that same year and retired in 1979 as a Chief Petty Officer. Bobby was also a graduate of Old Dominion University.
