Pauline Frances Goodwyn Barfield of Dendron passed away peacefully Monday, December 25, 2017. Born October 14, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Henry David Goodwyn and Annie Thrift Goodwyn. Mrs. Barfield was a devoted wife and mother who loved life and was the peacemaker of the family. She always put her family first and cherished every time the family celebrated together. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard McCoy Barfield; her stepmother, Myrtle Shackleford Goodwyn; her brother, David Henry Goodwyn, Jr. and a grandson, Richard Alan Barfield.

Shirley was an avid “TarHeel” fan and greatly enjoyed bridge games with the “Bridge Ladies of Suffolk”.

Born August 16, 1947, he was a son of Clara Virginia Catron Wellons and the late John Morgan Wellons, Sr. John served his country in the United States Air Force and was a graduate of Mississippi College where he majored in History. He was also a member of Central Hill Baptist Church, a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and a Baptist minister. John was a good Christian man and will be missed by all who knew him.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Aubrey Raiford and his sister, Clara Bains

Shirley Rose Sheffield Yancey of Waverly, Virginia passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2017. Born July 11, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Eddie Clarence Sheffield and Ida Louise Wells Sheffield. Mrs. Yancey graduated from Waverly High School in 1947. After graduating she went to work for Hartz and Rogers until her retirement in 1964. In 1953 she married Mr. Thomas E. Yancey, who worked with the Virginia Department of Forestry from 1949 to 1982. Mrs. Yancey was a member of the Waverly Women’s Club and served three terms as president.

Mr. Sims was born on March 31, 1928, to in Bumpass, Virginia, in Louisa County northwest of Richmond.

Mr. Sims was the longtime parts manager for the former Suffolk Equipment Company, an International Harvester dealer, later Navstar dealer.

He graduated from Louisa County High School in 1945.

Natalie Jeanette Crocker Branch of Wakefield passed away peacefully Monday, November 27, 2017. Born August 30, 1964, she was a daughter of the late William Harvey Crocker and Nell Branch Crocker. Natalie loved to hear her sons play music; she was their biggest fan and was extremely proud of them. She was the “neighborhood mom” who invited many children into her home and treated them like they were family. Natalie loved lighthouses and had a lighthouse collection that extended throughout her house. She was a member of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church.

Richard (Rick) A. Willey, age 62, of Suffolk, Virginia passed away on December 1, 2017. He was born in Biddeford, Maine and grew up in Kennebunkport, Maine. He attended the Consolidated School (grades K-8), and graduated from Kennebunk High School in 1974.

After completing high school, Rick joined the United States Navy and was stationed in the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area. After successfully completing his military service as a Machinists Mate, Rick decided to make Norfolk and later Suffolk, Virginia his residence.

Barbara DeBerry Whitmore passed away on November 23, 2017. She is predeceased by her parents Lenmore and Faith DeBerry, as well as her brother Mark Wayne DeBerry.

Barbara was a wonderful mother and grandmother; she had a remarkable love for her family. She was an excellent cook and loved spending her summers at Lake Gaston, with her free time she enjoyed going to casinos. Barbara was a member of First Baptist Church and she was a longtime employee of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. She later retired from Walmart.

Dorothy worked as a bookkeeper for V.L. Worrell and later as a teller at The Bank of Sussex & Surry which later became BB&T. She was a member of Wakefield Baptist Church and served on the board of directors for the Dendron Historical Society. Dorothy was a loving and devoted mother who never met a stranger and will be missed by all who knew her.
