Shirley Rose Sheffield Yancey of Waverly, Virginia passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2017. Born July 11, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Eddie Clarence Sheffield and Ida Louise Wells Sheffield. Mrs. Yancey graduated from Waverly High School in 1947. After graduating she went to work for Hartz and Rogers until her retirement in 1964. In 1953 she married Mr. Thomas E. Yancey, who worked with the Virginia Department of Forestry from 1949 to 1982. Mrs. Yancey was a member of the Waverly Women’s Club and served three terms as president. While a member of the Waverly Women’s Club, she served on the committee that organized the Waverly Rescue Squad. She also served as a squad member and as its first president. During her term as president, a monument was erected in the memory of the men who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and listed those who made the supreme sacrifice. Mrs. Yancey was a founding member of the Miles B. Carpenter Museum and was a leader in the Waverly Girl Scouts. She was active member of Waverly United Methodist Church, where she served in numerous capacities of the church such as Sunday School Teacher, Junior Choir Sponsor, co-worker with the Methodist Youth Fellowship, and secretary of the Administrative Board. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Thomas E. Yancey; her sisters, Jacqueline Sheffield Garrett, Ida Louise Sheffield West, and Mary Frances Sheffield Burton.

 

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Barbara Cruise of Salisbury, NC and Darla Bryce of St. Petersburg, FL; her brother, Eddie Clarence Sheffield, Jr. and wife, Laura Jean of Waverly; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many cousins.

 

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, December 3, 2017 at Waverly United Methodist Church, 138 Coppahaunk Ave. Waverly, VA 23890 with Rev. Steven Snodgrass officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Burial will be private. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Wakefield Chapel is serving the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations may be made to Waverly Rescue Squad P.O. Box 583 Waverly, VA 23890, or to Waverly United Methodist Church P.O. Box 12 Waverly, VA 23890.
