Mike was born on February 23, 1930 in Waverly, VA, to Maywood and Annie Chesson, and was one of eight children. He attended VA Tech before graduating from the University of Georgia, with a degree in Veterinary medicine in 1957.  He married Gail, his college sweetheart, in 1955. After college, Mike settled in Ivor VA, where he began his private practice, providing veterinary services to the southeastern VA community. Over the next 10 years, the couple welcomed 5 children into their home and Mike and Gail set about teaching them about Jesus Christ. Family remembers Mike as a kind and gentle husband and father, who encouraged them to pursue their goals. Along with his parents, Mike was preceded in death by a brother, Maywood W. Chesson, Jr.; his sisters, Anne Chesson (infant), Evelyn Raines, Katherine Scott, Ruth Shaw, and Rebecca Jones and a granddaughter, Erin Brigman.

He was passionate about his faith and sharing it with those he met.  When the children were grown and out on their own, he used his vocation to volunteer for the mission field with the International Mission Board, and he and Gail served faithfully for many years, both in South Africa and Mexico.  He was an active and dedicated member of Ivor Baptist Church, Waverly Baptist Church and Bethel Baptist church in Yorktown VA.

Thinking of you all this week, Cindy, Scott, Ken, Doug and Anne. Dr. Chesson was a pillar of Ivor for many years and I often say he was our primary care physician as far as Russell West was concerned. :) I'm so glad I got to have lunch with him and with Cindy not too long ago and he still had that same great smile I will always remember. Love and sympathies to all of you and to Miss Gail at this difficult time.

What a wonderful testimony that was shared in this obituary! Blessings and prayers to the family during this difficult time. Even though you rejoice in his homecoming, he leaves behind family and friends who mourn his loss. May God give you strength, comfort and peace.

What a blessing it has been to have this man and his family as part of my life. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to visit with him a couple of weeks ago to say my goodbyes. He made a great impression on me with his many kindnesses and love over the years, as did my Aunt Gail. May God bless this wonderful family in their walk through life these next few weeks. Even though we know he is home, we can't help but miss that smile:) xoxox

Our prayers are with you, Anne, and Rob, your mom, and the rest of your family and friends as you grieve and celebrate your dad's life . Dr. Chesson was a blessing to our family many times. Whether it was cats, dogs, cows or putting down dear old Mr. Duke, he was always kind and reassuring. May God hold you close during this time. Love to you all. Melissa

I am sorry for your loss of your dear Dr. Chesson. May you receive comfort from one another, loving friends, and God's Word. It is through the privilege of prayer that we can experience God's love and comfort in the most intimate way.
May you find comfort as you pour out your heart to God in prayer, because he cares for you. (Psalm 46:1)
