Harriett Eloise Brown Naylor passed away on November 15, 2017 at her home.  Harriett was born on April 6, 1918. She earned her BA in Science from James Madison University. She was also in attendance at President Truman’s Inaugural Ceremonies as a reporter for the Suffolk News Herald.  She was preceded in death by her husbands, Donald M. Johnson, Sr. and Robert Traver Naylor; father, Walter Pryor Brown, Sr.; mother, Zuleka Eloise Brown; brothers, Walter Pryor Brown, Jr., Thaxton Mallory Brown, and Robert Hunter Brown; and son Michael Traver Naylor.

Dorothy Joyner Hobbs of Wakefield passed away peacefully November 13, 2017. Born August 23, 1931 in Surry County, she was the daughter of the late Floyd C. and Gracie Goodrich Joyner. Dorothy worked as a bookkeeper for V.L. Worrell and later as a teller at The Bank of Sussex & Surry which later became BB&T. She was a member of Wakefield Baptist Church and served on the board of directors for the Dendron Historical Society. Dorothy was a loving and devoted mother who never met a stranger and will be missed by all who knew her.

Neil Thomas Unroe of Dendron, Virginia passed away Sunday, November 12, 2017. Born September 22, 1977, he was a son of John Thomas Unroe and Lou Ann Darden and her husband, Rudy. Neil worked for Waste Management in Waverly. He loved music and watching horror movies, but it was his family that he cherished the most.

Born in Virginia. He was the son to Lucy and William B. Phelps. He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Patricia A. Phelps.

 

Mr. Phelps retired as a General Manager for Beach Ford and then went to work for Cavalier Ford to socialize (and sometimes work would happen).

Her many interests included antique collecting, genealogy, and history. She was an active volunteer at Chippokes Plantation, where she also served as the Secretary of the Friends of Chippokes.

Jasper David Hall, 73, went to be with the Lord on November 4, 2017 surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late Jasper Hall and Louise Wilson Hall. Jasper served in the US Navy.

Jasper loved to spend time with his family and enjoyed swinging in his swing to help pass the time. He was able to invent things to do just to spend more time in the outdoors. He was a hardworking man with a good heart. “His family was his life.”

Josephine worked as a bookkeeper for Southern States in Wakefield and Cowling Brothers in Waverly. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Chapple Stephenson, Sr.; her brothers, Hudson Pond, Judson Pond, Homer “Jack” Pond and Harold “Jill” Pond and her sister, Elizabeth Goodrich.

Charles Lewis Marshall, Sr., 81, passed away on October 21, 2017 at his residence in Suffolk surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his parents, WB and Goldie Marshall, who owned Riverside Dairy in Churchland; and six brothers.

He retired as Senior Master Sergeant with the United States Air Force, then retired as a Regional Vice-President of Gordon Jewelry.
