David Goodrich Monette, formerly of Suffolk, Virginia, passed away on January 11, 2012, in Richmond, Virginia.

Mr. Monette was born in Boston, Massassachutts on January 26, 1937. He was predeceased by his parents, Valmore Harrison Monette and Jane Goodrich Alexander, and his brother, Richard Wayne Monette. He is survived by his wife, Georgellen Harrell Monette; his daughter, Noelle Chapman Monette; his son, Colin Thomas Monette and wife, Jennie Powell Monette; and his two grandchildren, Harrison Thomas Monette and Tyler Royall Monette. He is also survived by his brother, Alan Valmore Monette and wife, Margaret Elizabeth Monette; his sister, Ann Winston Monette and husband, Donald A. Haight; and his sister, Marcy Gale Monette; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

David was graduated from Smithfield High School in 1955. He joined the United States Marine Corp where he served until 1958, and remained in the reserves until 1961. In 1960, he received an Associate's Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.

In 1939, his father founded V. H. Monette and Company, a brokerage company representing manufacturers to the military resale system. David joined the company in 1960 and served as sales manager for their European division which directed marketing for that group. In 1963, he returned to the headquarters for the corporation in Smithfield, Virginia as Vice President of Sales and Marketing representing 20 consumer product manufacturers to the military resale system. Following the death of his father in 1974, Mr. Monette assumed the responsibility of the company as President. At that time, the company represented over 30 manufacturers to the military's commisaries and exchanges around the world.

In 1986, he and his brother, Alan, merged their company with Overseas Service Corporation of West Palm Beach, Florida, and they served as consultants for the next five years. After a brief retirement, David served as a Consultant and Director of Sales for Pre-Mix Industries, a Quikrete Company, for their retail and construction divisions until he "finally" retired in 2000.

Mr. Monette served as Chairman of the Board for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, as a Trustee at Hampden-Sydney College and was active with many other civic, church, and non-profit organizations throughout his life.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted on Monday, January 16, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Historic St. Luke's Cemetery, 14477 Benns Church Blvd, Smithfield, VA 23430 by The Rev. Ben R. Duffey and The Rev. Gary J. M. Barker, Jr. The family will receive friends and family on Sunday, January 15, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at R. W. Baker & Company Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, Suffolk, VA 23434.

In 1986, Mr. Monette's passion for the arts inspired him to establish an Art Show and Sale at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. In its 26th year, this endeavor continues to enrich the arts in the community. An art scholarship is currently being established in his name at the Academy. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the David G. Monette Scholarship Fund for the Arts at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, 3373 Pruden Blvd, Suffolk, VA 23434.

35 years ago David hired me and gave me opportunities which determined my career and shaped me as a person. He was bigger than life to me when I was 25 years old and I idolized him. He set the standard and made his sales force proud of our association with him. He was and is a legend.

I was 28yrs. old when I opened a letter...a job offer on gold embossed letterhead offering me a position as an account executive with V.H. Monette Co. It was signed by David G. Monette. My wife and I were so excited! Shortly after reporting to the office in Smithfield I was introduced to others and given a tour. As my guide and I left the cafeteria we then took a shortcut through the mailroom where for the first time I personally met David. Wow...what an imposing figure!I found him firm yet friendly. And what transcended it all during our brief introduction and discussion was his smile. For years to follow the flash of that smile would defuse the pressure and demands of business I often felt while letting me know he approved of my effort(s). My peers felt the same way.David lifted us all with his enthusiasm.I so appreciate how he could change the tenor of a tough meeting with humor then return to the business at hand. Several times my wife and our first two children visited the office. David would suggest that "they should take home some m&ms and treats". With the news of David's passing my heart is tender...filled with wonderful memories of our association.I am grateful for knowing him and the positive influence he has been in my life now 29 years later. My professional life was significantly shaped because of my work experience at V.H.Monette under David's leadership. My family has benefited greatly from that. My peace during this time is in the promise by the Father of us all that David will one day reunite with his wife and precious family. Until that day.. my deepest sympathy, love and kindest regards to each of you.

Georgellen, Noelle and Colin: Just received the word this morning and Lori (my wife) and I are greatly saddened!

From personal standpoint, it was a privelege to have David as MAJOR part of my life. His outstanding demeanor as a person and professional businessman was truly "inspirational in my life"! To say, he could be considered a mentor and business friend is an understatement. His faith in my abilities and how he taught me to excel to the "next level" in my career will never be forgotten.

Please know we are thinking of you and may GOD BLESS DAVID FOREVER!

Alan, Georgellen and Family...I had the pleasure of working for (and with) David at V.H. Monette and Company for 11 years, from 1976 till the merger in 1987. The business was run like a family. Everyone (except Mr. Shine) was called by their first name and there was a closeness not usually experienced in corporate business even though we were world-wide. My time there was a great growing and learning experience and I will treasure my memories of it always. David was
truly a great man. Gary (my husband) and I extend our heartfelt syspathy to you and your families. May God grant you comfort and peace during this most difficult time.

Alan,

I am so very sorry to hear of David's passing. I hope you will find comfort in knowing that others are thinking of you in your sadness and send their heartfelt sympathy to your and your family.

I haven't seen David since 1963, but I can still see him, as that impeccably dressed young man, standing outside my office window watching me. When I looked up and saw him, he started laughing and mirrored each move I made.

My years at V.H. Monette & Co. was a very memorable and important time of my life. You were a great help and comfort to me during some difficult times and I will always remember you fondly.

To David's family. I was lucky enough to know David for many years. David hired me when I was 29 years old and I stayed with VH Monette Company until the purchase by The Overseas Service Company where I spent 10 more years. I would continue after OSC with David as manager of the PMI Company. Today I am still a part of PMI, which is now a Quikrete Company, as manager. It seems like yesterday many of us called David our leader. David was born a true leader and motivator. I can still remember the many meetings where David would open up for our National Sales Meetings or even the meetings upstairs in his office. I call David not only my past boss but my true friend. He was always there for me and helped me in many ways. He was my mentor in life. David and I stayed in touch where he always talked about his family and how proud he was of you all.We all will miss David. I will not say goodbye but I would rather say, "David, until we meet again my friend."
